Description
This performance marks the Victoria premiere of Handel’s epic oratorio, Joshua. The work will be sung in English, accompanied by orchestra with members of the Victoria Symphony and Victoria-based soloists.
While many of Handel’s oratorios are well-known to today’s audiences, Joshua is an exception. It was composed five years after Messiah (1742), during the height of Handel’s creative period. By this time he was a landed immigrant in England, and was closely tied with other German-speakers there, including the entire royal family.
Joshua is one of Handel’s shortest oratorios and, as was common during the era, Handel borrowed music from his other compositions. The well-known chorus “See the Conqu’ring Hero Comes,” originally composed for Joshua, was so popular that Handel added it to Judas Maccabaeus, which had premiered the year before.
