This second concert featuring Telemann Cantatas for this holiday season will again shine a light on seasonal music that deserves to be programmed more frequently. Written to be performed in church or the ‘domestic scene’, these evocative cantatas are a masterly blend of tunefulness with skilled counterpoint and vocal and instrumental virtuosity, some written for ‘hohe Stimme’ (soprano or tenor) or for ‘mittlere Stimme’ (alto or baritone), one obbligato instrument (violin, transverse flute, recorder or oboe) and basso continuo.

Savour the start of the New Year with another program of expressive Telemann cantatas, these for Christmas 1, the Sunday after Christmas, New Year’s Day and the Sunday after Christmas Day. Also on the program will be Telemann’s Fantasia No. 1 in Bb Major for solo violin, TWV 40:14 (1735).

This concert will feature soprano Ai Horton, baritone Nathan McDonald, baroque violinist Marc Destrubé, Natalie Mackie on the viola da gamba and Christine Hutten playing the organ.

This concert is presented in partnership with the Pacific Baroque Festival.
